I Hate To Have To Do This

... But it has been forced upon me. I have had this blog for just over two years and I have now been forced to moderate the comments posted to my blog. Someone has repeatedly been posting very long religious comments on my blog. I delete it and they keep coming back. Is anyone else having this problem recently?

I am religious and everyone has their rights to what they believe or choose not to believe. They should start their own blog and post their ideas. These comments have absolutely nothing to do with my posts. They actually appear to be threatening in nature. So please bear with me and very sorry I had to do this.

I've had spam comments from time to time, but never religious ones. Lots of people use comment moderation; it's no big deal, but sorry you are forced to use it.

Hi Donna,

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your comments. I see you have been so busy moving, that you guys haven't gotten out on your goldwing (wasn't it?).

Really sorry you've had to deal with spam like that. I have a great spam filter that comes built into Wordpress, but when people go off on their own tears (religious or otherwise) it can be hard to prevent.

No need to apologize for moderation... everyone who blogs knows what a pain some commenters can be!

Once you're on a spammer list it's going to get worse. I ended up getting over 1 MILLION comment spams per hour, bringing my server down, so watch it....

Best is to immediately make sure they can't continue. Just deleting the comments is not going to do it. You'll need to close down comment before doing anything else. It's not a nice thing, since we bloggers live on comments, but for the time being, it's the only thing you can do.

Then go looking for a better CAPTCA system (the one you've got is not), or other efficient system (registered readers only, moderated comments).

Good luck!!

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for stopping by. Every now and then I think I would like to switch to Wordpress or something else, but then I'm thinking I would have to register at all the places I have feeds and start all over. But then I think that now is a good time to do that.

I also don't understand the process of what to look for and have been trying to do research. It's been kind of like a Cuckoo bird trying to learn how to knit a sweater, it just isn't happening, lol.

Hi Mike,

Great to hear from you. WOW, you have had some spam problems. I sure hope this doesn't get that bad. This particular problem has come back three times and quicker each time. What an annoyance!! Only deleting the comment sure didn't work in this case. Thanks for the advice.

I really appreciate everyones help with this. I got bombarded with spam on two occasions in the past when I turned off verification, but once I turned it back on things were fine. Many bloggers don't have their verification on, but maybe they have something to stop the spam?

Thanks,
Betty :)

Hi Betty,

Yeah, it seems once the spammers find you, then you forever become a target. I'd gotten along fine for about one year before I started getting tons of comments from spammers... It was never anything religious though; mostly lame attempts to peddle Viagra ;-)

Don't worry about turning moderation on. It's just one extra step to take - but your blog is worth it!

Cheers,
Lucky

I've had many spam comments but most of mine are x-rated and I put my on moderation for a while. Have you tried using a captca for your comments. When mine get bad I will use that. (ok see you've got that on here..sorry )

Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you again soon :)

Hi Lucky,
I'm glad I was able to get by for at least 2 years.

Hi Dawn,
Yikes, I've gotten two last year with links to x-rated stuff. They left their comments on very old posts and I'm sure no one saw them before I deleted them.

I've always used the moderate comments option. I am a forum admin and I insisted we go to manual registration, it's the only way to weed out spam (and jerks). Don't think twice about doing it. :)

Betty, I've had the same long religious spam lately. It's a little scary but it was the same both times I got it. I have had to turn on moderation also, and it's a good thing I catch those before they are on the blog. Good luck. I would hate for you to have to take drastic measures.

I'm rather new to this blogging experience and fortunately this has not happened to me. I was however a little confused one evening when I was looking to see if anyone has been linking to my site, and one in particular was a gal who had nothing in common with me at all(Motorcycles). Her blogsite was however extremely devoted to her faith, which is beautiful, it just left me a little perplexed as to why she would link to my Motorcycle blog. Maybe time will tell.

I remember you from the comments that you used to leave on Gary Charpentier's site , it's good to see you're back at it.

yes Betty -- I had to put moderation in, too.
I had some advertising spam, and then I probably had the same one you did. About 20 pages of some kind of nutcake ranting...all over place.

Glad to see you back posting!

Hi Betty,
I turned word verification back on... for the last couple of weeks I was getting hit with the same kind of religious spam messages, the message were so long they took up the whole page.

Glad to see you blogging again :) Jovi
