Photo Hunt - "Hope"

Theme: Hope ** Become a Photo Hunter

I haven't done the PhotoHunt in a while and I'm pretty excited to be participating this week. Yesterday I had mentioned in my post how I visited Rocky Mountain Cycle Plaza and Steve Clark, General Manager, was very helpful in helping me locate the new 2009 Yamaha V-Star 950. The above is the basic model in Raven (black). Steve induldged me and took my picture sitting it. Thank you Steve. It fits just like my 2002 V-Star 650 Custom. This is a sweet bike! It is my Hope that when I replace my V-Star 650 that I can get the V-Star 950, but with the Tourer package. It is my Hope that I could replace it this year with the Black Cherry model before my big trip to Texas this summer for the Women On Wheels (R) Ride-In. One can always Hope, sigh.

I learned about this new model for the first time in my Feb 2009 issue of Rider Magazine. They have a Rider Test writeup on it and just reading it highly peaked my interest. I really like my current V-Star, so replacing it with another upgrade V-Star just seems a no brainer. What I like about this model is that it's not too powerful, but way more powerful than what I have now. I really don't need a 1300 or more powerful engine. Plus, lets face the facts, those bigger machines just don't go low enough for my 5'2" tall body.

One of the features that I really like is it come with floorboards. I have footpegs and after a day on my bike my feet start to go numb. Another feature that I like is that it has eight-spoke cast wheels. I currently have spoked wheels and the members of the Mountain Shadow Riders that rode with me last summer can testify how my spokes do vibrate loose over time. That can be very dangerous, if not watch and adjusted as needed. I have learned that my spokes do work loose and that bugs me!

The 950 has a gorgeous design that I would never want to custom paint. In the write-up Clement Salvadori has many good things to say about the design and the ride. I would be very curious about the clutch, as in the write-up it he says that it's very smooth and "minimizes any risks of stalling when starting up." I would be a good test for that, lol. Okay, in my denfense I don't stall often and I guess we all tend to embarrassingly stall on occasion. I just hope the person behind me doesn't run me over at that green light when it happens.

Until I can Hopefully upgrade, I feel very lucky to already own the 2002 Yamaha V-Star 650 Custom. That is an incredible bike and I can depend on it. I have put over 15,000 miles on it over the last 3 1/2 years and it hasn't failed me yet. It is a rock-solid motorcycle. I have heard other V-Star owners say the same thing. I ride it to work, when the weather allows, and I ride it all over Colorado. It is excellent on pavement, rock, high mountain passes and did an excellent job getting me to the top of Mount Evans, CO (North America's highest paved automobile road). At the top we were at the elevation of 14,240 ft. It is 14 miles of some of the tightest twists imaginable. Once at the top we were warned that due to the elevation our bikes might not start up right away. Well, mine started on the first try and I had no doubt.

I have to say that any day on a motorcycle is a good day. I Hope you have a good day too.

~ This Saturday's Theme of Fake ~

When I saw that this week's theme is "Fake," I knew right away the picture I would use. The giant hercules beetle, being confined in an obviously soundly built fence, is most definitely fake. It does look like something out of a science fiction movie.

The hercules beetle is actually a marker for the locally famous May Museum of the Tropics. This museum is very popular in here Colorado Springs. Many schools and a bazillion students have been here to view the many invertebrates they have to show. Sadly, I haven't been to it myself, but my youngest son has thru a school field trip. He really liked it. Reading about it has me intrigued and I would like to go sometime. They have over 100,000 invertebrates, but as I understand it they only show about 8,000 at any one time.

They also have the Museum of Space Exploration and a Golden Eagle Ranch RV Park and Campground. What more could a person ask for?

WoooHooo I did it again!!! At first I just couldn't think of anything for this Saturday's theme. I was going thru my photos when I found my file of the Harley Davidson 5 in 1 run I did last July. Above are the batches (now on my vest) I got for going on the run. We did 5 mountain passes at 10,000 plus elevation in one day. I did a post on it after the run.

There was a LOT of people who went on this run. The above photo doesn't do justice for ALL the motorcycles that went on this run. They divided everyone into groups of about 18-22 motorcycles. There must have been at least 12 groups participating.

The above picture show my motorcycle with my bags. Most of us spent the night in Leadville that night. The run ended at a reststop about 1/2 hour away from Leadville. It would have been about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour ride back home and most elected to spend the night at Leadville. It was so much fun.

Here is my Yamaha V-Star 650 at Kenosha Pass. It was our first stop. Needless to say, I plan on doing this run again this summer. It is on my calendar already!!

Now I must get to bed. I need to get up early for the Mountain Shadow Riders montly meeting. It's going to be a quick meeting as many of us plan on doing the Pikes Peak Harley Owners Group #405 Ladies of Harley Annual Mother's Day Run. This will be my first year in this run. Last year I thought it was for Harley riders only, but I found out this year that it is open to all motorcycles. So I plan on sneaking my Yamaha in amongst all those Harleys *smile*.

~ This Saturday's Theme is Childhood ~

With the photo hunt theme "childhood," I needed to dig through my photos of when I was growing up. I actually had in mind a photo of when I was pretty young on a bicycle. I was pretty excited when I came across this photo I forgot I had.

This is the first time I was ever on a motorcycle. I'm in the white helmet riding the motorcycle by my dad, who is sitting on the tailgate of his truck. We are at Clear Lake, California and it's April 1970. I'm 11 years old.

It was a lot of fun going through old photos.

Words to the Wise: Don't show your kids your photos of when you were younger, say around 20 years old. They look at you, they look at the photo, they look at you and they look at the photo. Then they get this horrified look like some accident has happened to you, because they are wondering where's the pretty person of 20 years old. My eldest didn't mean to do that, but by golly, he sure did, lol. Then he stammers out, "This is YOU!!!?!?" Yep, I'm an old fart now, sigh.

PS: In rereading this I discovered an error. I was 10 years old in the photo. It was written 11 on the back of the photo, but I couldn't have been in 1970. It was written there by my dad's girlfriend at the time.

For over a year I have been on the lookout for purple gear. Or even any gear made for women. More and more the motorcycle industry is recognizing that they need to meet the needs of women. There are many of us out there who ride and don't want to wear gthe unisex gear that fit us like a box. Over the last year I have been amazed at how the industry is stepping up to the plate in designing boots, jackets, helmets, gloves, etc for us and with safety in mind. I applaud them and really appreciate the slowly growing choice of gear to choose from for women.


I recently bought the Joe Rocket - Womens Cleo 2.0 Jacket in purple. I was sooo excited when I saw this mesh jacket and how beautiful it is. It's reasonably priced and it has hard armor in the shoulders and elbows and a substantial armor plate for the back. It also comes with a liner that works pretty well in chilly weather. I was equally happy when it fit so well. Some of the women's jackets have designed their arms so they fit too tightly, but not the different women's Joe Rocket jackets I tried on.


So now I am set for the summer. This is a mesh jacket, which allows air flow thru it and it's significantly cooler for summer use. Because I love this jacket so much I wore it to work in 34 degree F. weather with my REI One jacket underneath and it kept me pretty warm.

Then I went looking for a matching helmet and found this ICON - Women's Hooligan Helmet. I love this helmet so much more then the red HJC LOOK CS-12. Mainly because I can now wear sunglasses with the helmet on and I love the violet color of the ICON. Whenever I tried to wear sunglasses with the HJC helmet they would pop up at a weird angle and I was constantly adjusting them, distracting me from the road. But that is no longer. My solution with the HJC helmet was to buy the tinted shield, but the plastic hinges broke a few times when changing out the different shields due to day/night changes. We were getting frustrated having to buy a new shield just because of stupid plastic hinges breaking.

My criteria when looking for motorcycle gear (in order of importance)

1. Safety - jackets must have armor, gloves must have decent protection

2. fit - It really must fit right and be comfortable

3. Looks - I look for something that I think looks nice for me as a woman

I was then able to find a very cool pair of ICON black/Purple gloves that fit nice and has good protection for the hand and fingers. They are for summer. For winter I will use my black leather gloves that I love and have already.

Now I need to find a winter jacket to go with my new helmet. If I have to, I will wear my red jacket with my violet helmet when the cold weather hits, but I sure hope not.

These pictures were taken last summer for the MSR motorcycle scavanger hunt. I had to have my motorcycle taken with the World Arena. During this time of day the huge parking lot was "empty."

It was a gorgeous day for these photos and it was the second time I ventured out on my own with my motorcycle for a long ride. When the day was said and done I had done 129 miles on August 28th of last year. I went to Penrose and back and was it fun!!!

~ Here's What a BMW F 650 GS Looks Like ~

In my next post I talk about a neat contest that happened this last summer. One of the ladies won a BMW F 650 GS and this is the bike, but in a different color from what she won. I was curious what the motorcycle looked like in real life, so this last summer during their competition I went over to the local BMW-Ducati of Southern Colorado to check it out.

It's a very cool bike, isn't it? I can just read your mind. Bet you're wondering if I'm trading in my bike for this model. It's a very cool bike and I love that it's dual - in that it can ride on both roads and dirt. My problem is they say they can't lower it to my height. It's about 1-2 inches too tall. Plus, I have to admit, I love my purple Yamaha V-Star 650. I was seriously looking at the BMW till we discovered it was a tad too tall. Oh well....

It Was A Gorgeous Day In Colorado

Wow, it was absolutely gorgeous today. Because I was very busy today, I was only able to ride my bike to and from church. With all the horrible weather we have been getting the last two months, I was very glad to be able to ride my V-Star that much. It was warm and the roads only have patches of gravel on them from previous snows.

I came home ahead of my family, due to my schedule. All the way home I kept hearing this little voice saying "Take the shortcut," which actually was the long way home, lol. Sadly, I didn't have the time for that today and took the straight and true course, sigh. I'm just grateful to have been able to get out. The above photo was taken this morning, so it's hot off the press, lol.

MSR Motorcycle Scavanger Hunt Now Officially Over

As of midnight on October 31st the Mountain Shadow Riders' Scavanger Hunt is now over. It has been a wonderful six months of hunting out all the places listed. For anyone new to my blog, I had a list of over 350 items to hunt throughout the state of Colorado. Once found, I had to take a picture of the item with my motorcycle. To prove I was actually there. Many of you have been reading about this from myself and Christine, who is also in the MSR. Christine was the creator of the list and she did an outstanding job!!! Thank you Christine.

As the deadline suddenly loomed, I went into a panic. I realized there were some simple things that I never got, because they were so close. So Monday I set out to get as much as I could get in a few hours and before I had to be at my elementary math tutoring job. Out of the things I wanted to get I split the list into two. I planned on getting half of it on Monday and the rest on Tuesday (the day of the deadline). I did go for as many things as I could. They were in town, but some were 20 minutes from others. So I got the barber, Fed Ex & ducks.

Then I had to rush to work, of which I was a little late. I teach basic math to 3rd graders for one hour after school four days a week. They are a group of the best kids I have had the pleasure to work with. Then I went to pick up my youngest son and a friend of his, that I watch after school, from middle school. Because of their older age I am able to leave them (it is okay with the boy's parents) for a little time. So I hoped on my bike to head out to Dragon Arms Military Museum on Dragonman Dr.

As soon as I hit one of the main drags in town (Powers Blvd) the sun dips behind Pikes Peak, sigh. So I'm thinking to myself I should just turn around and call it a day. But another part of me is saying "go for it, I can make it in time and the scavanger hunt is almost over." It's a little ways out of town. As soon as I get on Hwy 94 the wind hits me with such force and boy is it cold. I observe that there is a lot more snow still out this way. I start to shiver a little, but tell myself that I'm warm. Besides, there's no place to pull off and turn around. The side of the road has lots of gravel from the Blizzard of 2006. I keep on going. After quite a few miles, I start to rethink this whole thing, but still no place to turn around. The wind is hitting me with such force as to force my bike into a tilt to keep upright and it's getting colder and dark. Still no place to turn around. I get to the point that I'm almost there and might as well keep going.

I finally get to my left turn and I'm quickly loosing feeling in my hands. I'm shivering, but not badly, and realizing that I needed to dress warmer. I didn't think it would get so cold, but I'm almost there. I go down the country road and the next thing I know I accidently drive past my next turn. No problem (I think) I will just find the next pullout and turn around. I end up going many miles and finally pull off the road at a ranch. Then I have to wait for all the cars to go by before I can turn around.

It's getting dark fast. Sunday we just put the clocks back one hour and I hadn't got used to the days getting dark sooner. After all, that was only yesterday. I finally get a chance to safely turn around. I come to my next turn, that I accidently drove past the first time, only to discover that it's a wet, dirt road with some snow still. The sign for where I want to go is right there. I'm thinking it's only about a mile at the most down the road, but it's almost dark and the road is not in the best of condition. I'm not sure of the condition of the road further down and it's obvious the place is closed. If I get stuck further down, no one is around to help. Sure, I have my cell phone, but it would be at least 45 minutes before help arrived. It's getting real cold by now. I would be a human popsicle if I get stuck. So I make the decision and I turn the bike around on the dirt road and park it next to the sign. I quickly take the pic and hope it will count.

I get back on my bike and head back to town. By now I'm feeling very, very cold and thinking of my warm house. I haven't been gone but 45 minutes, but with the sun down and it's dark, it feels like 2 hours. I think to myself to relax and it helps with not shivering. I had wanted to do at least one more scavanger hunt stop, but it's dark now.

I think to myself that I will just get it tomorrow. Until the sun set, it was a pretty warm day and I thought the next day would be the same. WRONG!!! I woke up to a very cold day. I had my husband wake me up early so we could get one item before we had to take our son to school. My husband woke me up and said it's too cold and suggested to let it go. I immediately wake up (please note that I'm not a morning person) to investigate the situation. It's 24 degrees Farenhiet outside and I'm having second thoughts. But I really wanted to get this particular picture. So I tell my husband that I want to do this. He really didn't care if I did or didn't, as he had the car to drive. His motorcycle is in the shop and has been for weeks, it's waiting for a part.

He's thinking I'm crazy, but we head out. We only have to go about two miles and getting there wasn't so bad. We take the shots and head home. By the time we get home I can't feel my hands. I'm still wearing my regular gloves, as the winter ones don't fit as well as I'd like. I finally drive into our driveway and park the bike. I can't wait to get in the house and warm up. Below is the shot that was worth getting up early and freezing for. One of the items was a "mattress store" and extra points for "rider wearing pajamas." This was one item I just couldn't let go by!! And as promised from a previous post, below is the pic.


Sorry guys, nothing spectacular or sexy there, lol. It's winter, after all!!! Sadly, the day never warmed up and I didn't get the last few pics I wanted. Plus, it was Halloween and I had things to do in the evening.

I now have the process of sorting my pictures and figuring out my points. I took at least one pic that doesn't count, as I thought I had to get the UPS truck & driver but it was Fed ex. I've got to turn it all in November 11th at our next MSR meeting. I've got around 1,600 points, but I have heard there's a few ladies with over 2,ooo. So I'm not winning, but who cares (okay, I do care alittle). I gave it my best and had a blast. It was very interesting getting to know more about Colorado and what's out there to see. I think we hear about the winner at our Christmas party. Sadly, that's the same night as my husband's office party, so I will have to call someone the next day (or read about it in Christine's Corner, lol).

This Saturday's Theme is "Safe"

When motorcycling, I do feel safer when I wear all my protective gear. I never drive my motorcycle without my helmet with visor, motorcycle jacket with armor, leather pants (what I'm wearing in this photo) or leather chaps, hightop leather boots and leather gloves. My fellow riding companions can vouch to the fact that even in the summer heat I do wear all this.

Motorcycling is a very fun way to get around. If you have never tried it, you must sometime. I did take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Beginners course before buying my motorcycle. I think it's the best way to see if this sport is for you. This course helps you to understand how a motorcycle works and how to safely ride it. It helps you to buy the right kind of safety gear and what to look for in buying a motorcycle. I can't say enough great things about this course.

His Rainsuit or Her Rainsuit?

My husband and I recently had a very good laugh. We actually got our Tour Master rainsuits mixed up and we're wearing each others, lol. Don't ask me how my husband managed to squeeze into my size small, but he did! And I'm very greatful he didn't rip the seams out!!

Last spring we got a really good deal on our rainsuits. We ended up picking the same color, as this color stands out to be noticed and we "like" that. These suits are great quality, too. The only difference is mine is size small and his an extra-large. In the above photo, we actually have on the right suits.

This summer we went on a family vacation and on the first day we hit two hours of non-stop, gully-washing, constant downpouring rain. Side note - we did have a blast riding in the rain - end side. Upon arriving at our hotel, we hung up our gear to dry. The next morning I'm not sure which of us grabbed their gear first (note: not wanting to put blame here, but my husband is always up and packed to go first!!), but whoever did, see previous note (lol), didn't grab their own suit. Before I packed mine away, I'm looking for my tank bag strap that I had put into my pocket when I took the tank bag off and put it in the car with our sons. I'm searching my (actually his) rain jacket and can't find it. We never realized then that we had accidently swapped our rainsuits. We search all over and can't find the strap. I'm pretty upset that I accidently lost it. So we, unknowingly, pack our wrong rainsuits into our motorcycle saddlebags and hit the road.

A couple of months go by and we take a trip up to Cripple Creek for the annual Vets Rally. As goes the course, we get caught in a non-stop, gully-washing, constant downpouring rain, lol. I'm putting my suit on, thinking it's roomier then I remember, and he's putting his suit on, thinking his is tighter then he remembers but thinking it's because he's all wet and trying to put the suit on in the rain. As you know, when it's raining and you're trying to get these suits on, it's not easy even when they are the right size, lol. It's raining very hard and we just want to get our rainsuits on and get back home. We still don't realize the mistake we made months ago.

Now a few weeks go by and my youngest son comes running into the house with my tank bag strap. I'm elated to have my strap back. I do the happy dance. I ask where on earth did he find it? My husband still hasn't realized our mistake. After the dance, I start to think about this. I thought the strap was in my jacket. My jacket (really his, are you confused yet?) is in the house. I go to look at it and see it's size X-large. Now I'm pretty sure I didn't get that size. I go outside and have my husband pull out his rainsuit and it's then we finally discover that a switch had been made. He had a size small rainsuit in his motorcycle bag.


That's when we have a really good laugh. Now he understands why his (really mine) rainsuit was so hard to get on when we were in Cripple Creek. This is one story we will happily remember for years to come.

Motorcycle Scavenger Hunt VS My Dignity

The Mountain Shadow Riders Scavenger Hunt is soon coming to a close (Oct 31^st). I’m sad to see this. It has been a lot of fun this summer trying to locate as much as I could of the just over 350 items on the list. It started April 1^st and I have been sharing some of it with you thru the summer.

Just this last week I got out and located about 30 more items within the city. Now I’m getting to some of the more goofier stuff. It’s stuff that I wonder if it’s worth the 10 points to get. Yah, I have no problem getting a pic of my motorcycle in front of a “mattress store,” and if I’m in the photo wearing pajamas, I get for 10 extra pts!!! I can just hear my “Dignity O’Meter” going down: da-ding, da-ding!!!

I’m not sure I’m up to wearing pj’s in public, lol. Oh sure, I can get there and then slip them on over my clothes. BUT!!! Someone is most likely going to see me, YIKES!! Not to mention my husband is going to laugh his head off.

Then there’s the “Costume Shop.” No problem, I can drive up and get a photo there, but I can get 10 extra pts if I’m wearing a costume in the photo!!! Once again I hear the ‘ol “Dignity O’Meter” going down: da-ding, da-ding, da-ding, da-ding!!!

After an incident this last week, maybe I can do these things. My husband & I cruised up to one more item on the list – “A Strip Club.” My husband found this for me, as I had no clue where one was. Well, it turns out there’s one not far from our house, hmm . . . how’s my husband know this? LOL. Okay, we get up to this place and I get in position for the picture.

But wait my husband get this gleam in his eye’s and decides we need to change things a little. He tells me to pretend to strip for the pic, lol. Well, there are three guys in the next lot over eyeing us. You can tell they are wondering what we are doing. I agree and pretend, but my husband takes FOREVVVERR with the camera!! I’m getting uncomfortable doing this, the guys are liking this and my husband is having a blast. Okay, for the record, nothing much happened. I just messed with my motorcycle jacket. How sexy can that get? By the photo above, not much.

It’s the next day when I get to thinking about this that I realized I was also facing out to the street and all those cars going by were probably wondering what in the world was I doing? Once again I hear the ‘ol “Dignity O’meter” going down: da-ding, da-ding, da-ding, da-ding!!! I just hope nobody I knew was in any of those cars, lol. I’m just glad a cop car never went by.

After that, you’d think I had enough, but NO!! I go to a “Skating Rink” and “rider wearing skates” is an extra 10 pts. I pick a time when it’s closed. I drive up and my heart sinks. There’s a car parked right about were I need to park and there’s people in it, sigh. Okay. I park and quickly get the skates on (but knowing I’m being watched I can’t get the skate on fast enough, lol). How’s the “Dignity O’meter?” It’s going down: da-ding, da-ding, da-ding, da-ding!!! I’m feeling pretty silly with those people watching. I get ready to leave and they then drive away. I quickly get the skate back on to get my husband to take a photo without their car in it.

Then there’s “Fitness Gym” and an extra 10 pts if “rider is wearing workout clothing.” Turns out all the gyms I find have huge glass windows all across their fronts. So the one I pick, I park and quickly get into the final gear. Jump on my bike and pose. I’m feeling eyes boring into my back and I just want to get the shot and get out of there, lol. I feel my “Dignity O’meter” going down again: da-ding, da-ding, da-ding, da-ding!!! YeaGads!! By the look of the above photo I’d better head for a gym, lol.

I don’t mind finding the stuff where I can quickly get in, get the photo with my bike (and me included at times) and get out without much notice. But this last week I got lots of quizzical looks from people. The items lately are more out in public and that’s tough for me. But hey, I’m finding that I’m actually up to the challenge (most of the time, lol).

I’ve already surprised myself by going into a fire station and asking some of the fire fighters if I could get them in my photo. When I first looked thru the list and saw fire fighters in a photo were extra points, I thought, “well I won’t do that.” I thought I’d die of embarrassment if I did. Well, I did ask and I’m still alive, lol.

I find a “street with my first name.”

So will I let my “Dignity O’Meter” drop a few points for a few goofy photos? Will I wear pajamas at a mattress store and/or a costume at a costume store? I really don’t know. I guess time will tell, lol.
